SOUTH AMERICA

Visionaries in Argentina started transplanting non-indigenous big game species over a century ago.

Each adapted and has thrived.

RED STAG

Widely acknowledged for its world-class, high-volume dove, duck, and perdiz hunting, and trout and dorado fishing, Argentina also offers an attractive array of big game hunts in Patagonia and select northern and eastern provinces of the country. The most notable species is the noble red stag which was successfully transplanted by Europeans into the foothills of the Andes in Patagonia well over a century ago. Stags now also thrive in La Pampa and San Luis Provinces. This royal deer has found a new natural home in Argentina where they now exist in big numbers with the quality of trophies rivaling New Zealand.

This signature species can be hunted on large estates approaching 30,000 acres in area and on much larger private ranches of 80,000 acres where they can be hunted free-range. It’s important to note that animals on the estate are born there and not stocked like a game ranch. Hunts begin in March and run through the end of June. Nature decides when the “roar” will begin and end each year. This is a classic time to hunt them – from generally around mid-March through to the end of April.

PÈRE DAVID’S DEER

Originating in China, southern Patagonia is the only place in the world where they exist in a hunting environment and huntable on a fair chase basis. Other huntable populations of Père David’s can be found on private estates in England, but Patagonia has become the preferred choice of destination hunters.

Their unique antlers and 500-pound weight make them one of the rarest deer species in the world. December is the rutting period, but they are huntable through to May.

OTHER BIG GAME SPECIES

Argentina is home to some exceptional hunting for water buffalo, fallow deer, blackbuck antelope, brocket deer, and axis deer. Most of these species can be found in Patagonia. But most of them also exist in provinces further north.

The big game hunting season in Argentina allows combinations with pass shooting for doves, ducks, and pigeons, and walked-up Perdiz as well as fishing for golden dorado and trout. Ask about wing shooting options; many of our big game outfitters also offer these programs. We have experienced both their wing shooting and fishing on several occasions and can attest to their quality.
