SOUTH PACIFIC

The bushveld of Australia's "top end" and New Zealand's mountains stand in stark contrast to each other. But they share a legacy of professional outfitting for challenging species.

AUSTRALIA

ASIATIC WATER BUFFALO

These big, sweeper-horned buffalo run wild in picturesque and rugged Arnhem Land, also referred to as the “Top End”. This geologically interesting part of the country is raw and wide open and is home to some Aboriginal settlements. These buffs inhabit tropical grassy wetlands and palmed forests.

These buff average about 20-25% larger in mass than a Cape buffalo. And besides the thrill of hunting them, hunters who like big bore rifles have an affordable compliment or alternative to an African buffalo safari.

Cape Buffalo
BENTANG

This wild ox is considered rare and highly intelligent. They are massive and equally perceptive in sensing anything that feels out of place in their surroundings. A hunter will need to apply skill and stealth when hunting this wild and fascinating bovine. Bentang are easily combinable with Asiatic Water buffalo and other species.

OTHER GAME SPECIES

One of the greatest and most elusive deer of the world is the Sambar. To hunt them free range in the forests in the Victoria region of the south will surely be a test of skill and cunning for deer collectors.

Further north on massively large game ranches and terrain that typifies African grasslands and savannas are attractive species like Moluccan Rusa deer, Javan Rusa deer, axis deer, fallow deer, red deer, and wild boar.

NEW ZEALAND

RED STAG

Red stag hunting is an industry in its own right in New Zealand. The stags are a product of transplantation beginning in the 1850s from various European and English herds over a century ago and since then are a product of game ranch breeding to stock various hunting estates.

Their diets can produce incredible massive racks scoring 500 points or more. There is some free-range stag hunting in New Zealand, but the average trophy is easily out-scored by the average on the game ranches. Most estates range about 5,000 acres in size, but they hunt larger than that due to the hilly and undulating terrain.

Prices range according to score, and hunters can book hunts for specific types of animals; bronze, silver, gold, and even greater depending on the level of trophy desired and their budget.

Several options are available on both the North and South Islands. Accommodations are always superb and will easily satisfy requirements for comfort for non-hunters. March through May is the rutting period. Regardless, success is virtually assured during or outside of the “roar” for the level of trophy quality desired. Package hunts for mid-level trophies are very popular because most exceed the impact of the average elk that many hunters have taken.

ELK

In the early 1900s, North American elk were transplanted from a herd in North America. From about March through August annually, they present an attractive alternative to elk hunting in the USA. They can grow to 400+ points and easily better, and we hunt them on estates offering a worthy hunting experience.

TAHR

Himalayan tahr are one of the most alluring mountain species extant. Their coats sport long flowing hair that draws attention even in the most populated trophy room.

The population is strong but hunts are challenging. Tahr will be found in altitude ranging from 2,000 to 8,000 feet and require a good level of fitness and long-range shooting ability to improve the odds of success.

CHAMOIS

For as diminutive in size as these goats are they require strategy, fitness, and patience for success. Good populations are found in some of the most spectacularly beautiful terrain of the Southern Alps.

OTHER SPECIES

Many hunters focus on taking a big stag, but numerous multi-animal combinations are possible. These combo hunts could involve hunting on both the North and South Islands. Besides red stag, thar, and chamois available in various combinations, hunters have multiple choices that help the long travel even more worthwhile. Fallow deer, sika deer, rusa deer, and Arapawa ram are a few among the options.
